how to stay naturally healthy this wonter, 5 home remedies that keeps you naturally healthy this winter, how to avoid the flu and colds using natural remedies, how to naturally fight the flu

Winter can be fun, it's got the holiday period, Christmas time and the anticipation of snow in the air but it can also be the hardest time of the year to stay well and healthy.  A combination of seasonal flu, colds and changing of temperatures can wreck havoc on our bodies and immune systems so we thought we would share with you some of our best tips on how to fight off the winter bugs when we feel them approaching...

1.  Hydrate
This is our number one.  As soon as we feel the first sign of a sore throat or cold coming on we up our intake of fluids.  Not only does drinking more help you replace any fluids your losing due to stomach bugs or a fever from the flu, it can also be a prevention in itself.  Keep your liquids to water and herbal teas.  You can choose your tea depending on what your body is fighting.  For colds and flu's, Elderflower, nettle and rooiboos teas are great flu fighters and licorice tea is amazing at fighting sore throats and calming a chesty cough. For tummy bugs and viruses, ginger and peppermint tea will give you some relief.  To keep your immune system in tip top condition so you don't pick up any nasties, keep sipping chamomile and ginseng throughout winter to help boost your immunity.  To read more about our favourite herbal teas and what they help with go here.

2.  Sleep
Your body needs to recover when it's fighting illness.  When you are experiencing symptoms of a cold or think your about to get one, go to bed and sleep.  No one likes to be sick and stay in bed but it's something that your body really needs.  Sleep lets your body recover and you will find yourself needing a lot more sleep and rest than usual when your body is trying to heal itself, so put on Netflix, pick your favourite movie and relax, your body will thank you for it!

3.  Eat Green
This is probably the last thing you want to do when your feeling under the weather. One of the easiest ways to ward off incoming bugs is to eat good, unprocessed plant based foods.  Up your intake in green veggies especially, as they have many immunity boosting properties.  If your not able to eat much when your symptoms are in full swing then blend yourself up a smoothie full of green goodness, this will hydrate you and fill you up too!

4.  Take Your Vitamins
So we've written about this a little bit the other week here, but supplementing with vitamins and minerals especially throughout winter is really important.  Vitamin D and Vitamin C are the two you need in your medicine cupboard for flu season.  Both will help your body fight the flu and hopefully shorten the span of any bugs you catch.  Taking Zinc has also been shown to reduce symptoms of the common cold, so its another great one to stock up on when your not feeling good.

5.  Home Remedies
We love to try any natural ways we can to help ease our symptoms, so here are some of our favourite DIY hacks.  Drinking a mug of hot water with some lemon in it (either a few slices or squeezed juice from it) has been the one thing that we rely on to always soothe our sore throats, you can also add a dollop of raw honey into the mix for added healing properties.  Apple Cider Vinegar is another amazing natural remedy for just about anything, Dr. Marilyn Glenville shares "The benefits of apple cider vinegar have been touted by the ancient Egyptians and claims of its benefits go back to Hippocrates.  It has traditionally been used to treat many ailments including cancer, joint pains, arthritis, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and many more.”  this is thought to be because of all the amazing goodness that is in ACV  "Cider vinegar is made by the fermentation of apples and it is this fermented fruit acid which contains a host of beneficial vitamins and minerals including potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and other trace minerals, as well as pectin."
We love to take a glass of water and add a tablespoon of ACV to it  and down it in one. This should help your body fight all the bad bacteria quicker.  And lastly our MVP for getting rid of any sore throat, is gargling with salt water.  We take a small mug of warm water, add a teaspoon of Himalayan salt and let it dissolve, let the water sit until its nearly cool and gargle, remember not to swallow any of the mixture though!
